Start with the median

Half of all drywall companies on Google have 3 reviews or fewer. A shop with 12 reviews is in the top quarter. The 75th percentile is 10 and the 90th is 30. Only 2.3% of drywall contractors have reached 100 reviews, and 0.1% have reached 500.

24.8% of listings have no reviews at all. 75% have fewer than 10. The mean of 12.6 is pulled up by a small number of large repair franchises and multi-crew remodel shops; it tells you nothing about the shop down the road. Use the percentiles.

What this means in practice: the map pack for "drywall repair near me" in most towns is decided by shops with somewhere between 10 and 30 reviews. That is a number a two-person company can reach in a single year by asking at every final walkthrough.

Why the counts are so low

This is a builder's trade. Most drywall companies on Google have one customer type: a general contractor or production builder who sends them forty houses a year and never leaves a review.

That is the structural reason behind the median, and it is also the opportunity. The homeowner side of the trade, repairs, water damage, popcorn ceilings, basement finishes, garage drywall, pays at the door and searches on Google. The shops that serve it and ask for reviews are the 2.3% at the top. Everyone else is invisible to a homeowner holding a phone.

Ratings do not separate anyone

The average rating is 4.6 stars. 57.1% of rated listings sit at a perfect 5.0 and 76.4% are at 4.5 or better. A 4.9 does not make a drywall company stand out; it is the default for a shop with six reviews from friends and repeat customers. 22.4% have no rating at all because they have no reviews.

The only place rating matters is the bottom. 13.2% of drywall companies are below 4.0, and a homeowner comparing three listings skips those without reading. If you are there, the fix is volume: twenty new reviews at the walkthrough moves a 3.8 to a 4.5 faster than any amount of replying to old complaints.

The website gap

49.4% of drywall contractors list no website on their Google profile. Drywall companies with a site have a median of 6 reviews. Companies without one have 1. The site does not cause the reviews; owners who take the homeowner side seriously tend to build both. But the gap is the clearest single marker of a competitor who is not going to fight you for the map pack, and the clearest single thing to fix if it describes your shop.

A five-page site with a tap-to-call button, a repair page with price ranges, a popcorn removal page and twenty photos is a week of work.

Hours, photos, email

63.4% of drywall listings show no hours at all. Google displays nothing useful on those, and a homeowner at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday does not know whether to call. 18.5% list Saturday hours and 8.8% list Sunday. If you take calls on Saturday, saying so puts you ahead of four in five competitors on a day when homeowners are home and looking at their walls.

91.7% have a profile photo, so a listing with none is in a very small and very unimpressive group. 13% publish an email address. 3.8% claim to be open 24 hours, which for drywall is usually a water damage angle and usually not true.

What to do with this

  1. Find your own numbers. Open your Business Profile and note your review count, your rating, whether a website is linked and whether hours show.
  2. Place yourself. Under 3 reviews is the bottom half. Under 10 is the bottom three quarters. 30 and up is where the map pack is won in most towns.
  3. If you are in the 49.4% with no site, build one before you spend a dollar on ads. The website guide lists the five pages.
  4. Start a review process at the walkthrough. One review per completed job gets a 5-review shop past the 75th percentile in a few months. Scripts are in the reviews guide.
  5. List real hours, including Saturday if you answer, and add the services homeowners search for by name: repair, water damage, popcorn removal, texture match.
  6. Turn on missed-call text-back. The calculator shows what the calls you miss on stilts are worth. Then, with reviews, a site and an answered phone in place, ads start to pay.

Method

This report aggregates 9,203 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for drywall companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
